NHL analyst dismisses Carey Price’s jersey retirement case for lack of honors

On Friday, NHL analyst Brian Wilde argued against the Montreal Canadiens retiring Carey Price’s No. 31 jersey while appearing on The Sick podcast with Tony Marinaro, and Wilde dismissed Price’s deservingness for the honor of retiring a jersey due to his lack of silverware.

Carey Price was then drafted by the Canadiens in 2005 and quickly became a great player. He went on to play 712 NHL games, the second-most by any goaltender for one team. Price had 361 regular-season wins (the most in Habs franchise history), a 2.51 goals-against average, 49 shutouts and a .917 save percentage.

Price’s Jersey Retirement Case For Lack OH Honors

Although Price did not win the Stanley Cup, he won gold medals for Canada at the 2014 Sochi Olympics and the 2016 Hockey World Cup. He then won the Hart Trophy in 2015, again awarded to the NHL regular season MVP. He is the only goaltender to win the award in the past 22 years.

On July 16, Carey Price revealed in an interview published by Arpon Basu in The Athletic that he missed playing hockey. However, he doubts he will be able to play goalie again due to his knee problems.

Price hasn’t officially retired yet, but he last played on April 29, 2022, against the Florida Panthers at the Bell Centre, in a 10-2 win for the Montreal Canadiens. Ken Dryden, former Canadiens goaltender, has repeatedly supported the Hall of Fame case for Carey Price. Dryden called Price a “very, very good goaltender.” Price’s potential retirement has sparked debate about retiring his number 31 jersey and then inducting him into the Hall of Fame.

Then there was the six-time Stanley Cup winner Dryden who had to wait 24 years to have his jersey retired. And then there was the hope among fans that if that happened it would have been the honor Price got sooner.
